The coolest fun fact should me mentioned first, right? The word "veli" means big in Croatian, while the word "mali" means small. Still, the biggest city of the Lošinj island is called "Small Lošinj" and tiny Veli Lošinj is the "Big Lošinj". Confusing but cool.
Once again, my family was extremely spontaneous with our annual family vacation destination. On Tuesday my mom told be we were going to Sardinia, on Wednesday she changed it to some Spanish city I don't remember, and on Thursday she confirmed that on Saturday morning we will be going to Croatia.
For someone from Slovakia/Austria/Hungary etc. is Croatia the go-to vacation spot. You get in the car, and in few hours you find yourself by the sea. And you know how sometimes you can't appreciate what you have because it seems like the most exciting things are those that you don't have? This is exactly the case for me (and many othe people I think). The truth is, however, that Croatia has SO MUCH to offer! You can find everything in there. Empty beaches and tiny cities, beautiful hiking trails, big parties and cheap alcohol, Croatia really has it all. (Oh I nearly for got to mention that they shooted some parts of the Game of Thrones in Dubrovnik!) But about that later, maybe in some other post. Let's get back to Veli Lošinj.
Last year I fell in love with this tiny city. It's basically one port, a few houses, and a hotel. Very small, but so lovely! I think they get many German speaking tourists because everybody speaks really good German. They have not fully caught up on the vegan trend but I found a restaurant that offered some vegan meals which was nice. The fruits and vegetables taste really good and I also noticed that they have a thing for bakeries and pastry.
Depending on how lazy you like to be during your vacation, you can either take it easy, sleep in, lay on the beach and snack all day long because everything tastes delicious. Or you can be an active vacationer. I know that waking up at 5:20 to have a sunrise yoga session isn't everybody's cup of tea, but I suggest you to try to catch an early sunrise at least once. It's pure magic. Morning swims are also amazing and work better than coffee. Not that I did them regularly, but my mom did. After my morning yoga session I usually went to the market to buy some fresh fruits, and then headed back to the apartment to have breakfast and journal a little. My fam usually spent the mornings in the area of our apartment, swimming and reading at the beach, and in the afternoon we went exploring other beaches and cool spots in the area.
I haven't noticed any official hiking trails, but went hiking anyway. We just got lost somewhere above Veli Losinj, went in no particular direction but enjoyed it nevertheless. The nature is very beautiful and when it's stormy it even looks tropical. I really like the fect that the beaches are mostly rocky. It makes the water nice and clear and you don't have to deal with the sand afterwards.
Even though I love exploring new cities and countries, somehow I always feel the need to return to Veli Lošinj. It's sort of like coming back to your room or your apartment after a long day. You like to come back because it's your safe zone. It's small and you know it well. It's where you are when you need to take a break from the world, relax, and recharge your batteries.
Till the next time,
